Which is better for you? Which gives you the most amazing glow, and which one keeps you skinny?

The truth is that both vegetable smoothies and juices are a bonus for your health. The debate goes like this;

Smoothies (for this purpose, we are talking about vegetable and or fruit smoothies only) are blended veggies, with the occasional fruit added in. People often use a Vitamix or another type of high-speed blender that will grind the veggies and liquefy them, leaving a pulpy residue.

Adding in liquids, like water, makes the consistency more palatable and juice-like. Many people prefer adding fruit to their smoothies, and fruits are beneficial for cleansing. I recommend up to ¼ of your smoothie containing fruit, otherwise your smoothie becomes high in sugar and can create issues like yeast overgrowth. You don’t have to add fruit; I prefer mine with a drop of lemon flavored liquid stevia to take the edge off. That’s hard-core:)

Smoothies are easy to make- toss the veggies in your blender and turn it on, and it’s easy to clean up afterwards. This makes the smoothie a great solution for rushed mornings and busy people.

Most importantly, you retain the fiber of the vegetable and all of the nutrients, so you are not “wasting” any part of your pricey organic veggies. Fiber is highly beneficial for our digestive track, so most fans of smoothies prefer them for this reason.

Juices are made by extracting the fiber from the vegetable, and your choice of blender will determine the level of nutrients the juice contains. A home blender, for example, like the Breville Juice Fountain, uses centrifugal blending to remove the juice from the pulp. I recommend the Breville for one reason, it’s easy to use and clean. (I find with my ultra busy clients that if it’s not easy, it doesn’t happen.)

Pressed juices are made using a Norwalk brand juicer, a professional juicer that grinds the vegetables to a pulp and then presses the pulp to extract the juice. Pressed juice fans, (of which I am one) claim that the juice contains more nutrients and lasts longer.

Centrifugal juices last a few hours, and should be consumed immediately for freshness, while pressed juices last up to 3 days under refrigeration.

Juices contain concentrated nutrition; more veggies are needed to create the juice, and the nutrients enter your bloodstream quickly, without the fiber of the smoothie to slow it down.

Some people prefer the energy of the smoothie, and the slower absorption of nutrients, and others prefer the high-octane infusion of a juice.

This is a personal preference, and I recommend you try both—see how you feel when you drink it, and which tastes better to you. Consider which is sustainable for your lifestyle and which will you actually do each day, that’s the key point.

Sometimes I crave the high energy that I get from juicing, and other times I want a Vitamix full of smoothie that I can sip all morning. I tend to go back and forth.

Just remember, it’s not religion, it’s a green drink. Have fun with it!

A couple of months ago, our cat, Little, became voraciously hungry.

Little is my son’s cat, and having been raised by a young boy, he’s never wanted anything other than food and my son’s love. Little comes running when my son whistles for him, and like many cats he’s always been independent.

Then something changed. Little began crying for food all day long, looking up at whomever was in the kitchen at the time, insisting loudly on being fed. Did you feed Little? Became the question of the day, and I began to give him little spoonfuls just to keep him quiet.

After days of this behavior, I thought I’d better have him checked for worms or parasites, anything that could have caused this bottomless pit of hunger. The tests were clean, and Little persisted in demanding food.

I had to leave for a few days on a business trip, and I returned to find my husband standing in the kitchen, cradling Little in his arms as I walked in the door.

Everything ok, honey? How’s Little?

Well, I’ve discovered something interesting, answered my husband as he pet our buff- colored fluffy cat. I find that when Little begs for food, if I pick him up and hold him tight, he stops begging and then walks away.

I smiled, and thought, what a wise man.

Our other cat, Big, had passed away a few weeks prior to the food issue. We never thought they were close friends, but I realized that the absence of Big had created a void, and what he really needed all along was love, touch and holding. Big had been a physical playmate and Little obviously missed wrestling with him.

Often when we reach for food, we’re reaching for physical contact, for love, security, or a hug. We’re programmed to desire physical touch from those close to us; children physically need physical contact for their brains to develop properly, and adults instinctively reach for each other to express emotion or to provide comfort.

The next time you reach for food that your body doesn’t really want or need, call a friend, take a warm embracing bath, hug your significant other, or child, call your mother, or have a cup of hot tea.

Food hugs are short lived, and they’ll leave you crying for more all day long.
Seek your hugs in other ways that support your well-being, and allow you to walk away better for it.
March is also International Women’s History Month, and even so, there are those who think women should just “stay in the kitchen”.

Who said we ever left?

You and I know that we can run our businesses, and still cook dinner now and then. Let’s use our kitchens as a source of power and inspiration, not oppression!

My friend, Tera Warner, knows inspiration when she hears it. Tera created and organized the WISH Summit (Women’s International Summit for Health), and this year’s summit promises to be the best one yet.

The WISH summit features free interviews with popular personalities who are experts in their fields of attitude, relationships, food, health, fitness, balance, abundance, wisdom, beauty, and sensuality.

I’m thrilled to say that I’m being interviewed by Tera for my segment that’s set to appear in your inbox on March 24th. Tera and I will be talking FOOD, and how your best friends eating STYLE may not necessarily be the right STYLE for you.

Tera is a bright bubble of a personality; her enthusiasm for her guests makes this series an absolute delight!
There’s no cost to this program, so enroll today for your 40 days of INSPIRE.

Share WISH with a friend! They’ll be grateful you did. Click share below and leave a comment

You like to take responsibility for your own health, especially in today’s world of fast foods, gmo’s, and an abundance of overly processed snacks and nightly dinners. Doctor Mark Hyman, a former teacher of mine whom I greatly admire, has come up with a cutting edge, science based plan to help you out.

Mark Hyman,MD has written a new book called THE BLOOD SUGAR SOLUTION: The UltraHealthy Program for Losing Weight, Preventing Disease and Feeling Great Now!
He’s tackling what he terms Diabesity; an epidemic in our country effecting one in every two Americans.

Diabesity is Hymans term for metabolic disturbances, from mild blood sugar and insulin imbalances, to pre-diabetes, to full blown type 2 diabetes. It occurs in about 40% of people of normal weight – these are the skinny fat people who look thin but are metabolically fat and have all the same risk factors for disease and death as those who are overweight. And it occurs in 80% of overweight people.

It goes like this; when your diet is full of empty calories and an abundance of quickly absorbed sugars, liquid calories, and carbohydrates (like bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes), your cells slowly become resistant to the effects of insulin and needs more and more to do the same job of keeping your blood sugar even. You develop insulin resistance.

Your body begins to age and deteriorate. In fact, insulin resistance is the single most important phenomenon that leads to rapid and premature aging and all its resultant diseases, including heart disease, stroke, dementia, and cancer.

As your insulin levels increases, your appetite can spin out of control, increasing weight gain around the belly, more inflammation and oxidative stress, and myriad downstream effects including high blood pressure; high cholesterol; low HDL, high triglycerides; weight gain around the middle; thickening of the blood; and increased risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s, and depression. These are all a result of insulin resistance and too much insulin.

And because insulin resistance (and diabesity) are a direct outcome of diet and lifestyle, the condition is 100 percent reversible in the vast majority of cases, according to Dr. Hyman.

Hyman outlines his 8 Steps to Reversing Diabesity in Blood Sugar Solution, and reports the following results from his beta testing group; weight loss, loss of inches, lowered blood pressure, more energy and less fatigue, reduction in joint pain, improved moods and sleep, eliminated brain fog, and overall a greater sense of well being.

Who doesn’t want that?

I say grab a copy now, and get one for your husband, parents and friends.. They’ll thank you in a few months when they feel and look amazing.

February is Heart Health Month in the US, and I was a guest on ABC’s “Let’s Talk Live” last week sharing five red foods for heart health.

The American Heart Association, and the Million Hearts Initiative are campaigning for heart health, and adding these 5 easy foods to your diet will help.

Check out the tv clip for the live version.

1) Red Pepper::

Red bell peppers provide your daily dose of Vitamin C, and are a wonderful addition to your diet, especially during the winter cold and flu months. They help support your immunity and also provide double your daily need of Vitamin A. I showed them steamed with broccoli and garlic for a colorful and tasty side dish.

2) Beets::

Beets are high in heart healthy folate, which helps to produce healthy cells. They also contain magnesium, a necessary mineral for healthy bones and muscles. They’re also high in fiber, and help support a healthy digestion and immunity.

I shared a roasted beet salad with slivers of red onion, olive oil and a splash of red wine vinegar. I also love grating raw beets on top of my salad greens.

3) Tomatoes::

Tomatoes are high in the antioxidant lycopene, which is released when cooked. Lycopene is particularly healthy for men, and has been indicated in prostate cancer prevention. They also contain the essential, and often deficient minerals potassium and magnesium, as well as Vitamin C to boost your immunity.

I shared an organic tomato sauce with gluten free pasta, salsa, and a lovely tomato soup.

4) Wild Salmon::

Wild Salmon is both a healthy protein and fat, containing essential omega 3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation, benefit the heart muscle and boost your immunity. Vegan or vegetarians, get your EFA’s from flax oil or flax seeds, or chia seeds.

I shared smoked wild salmon on a bed of greens.

5) Red Wine:: in moderation

Red wine is loaded with polyphenols , most notably resveratrol , an antioxidant that is known to lower cholesterol, and has been shown to help prevent certain cancers, especially prostate cancer when consumed at the correct level. This antioxidant has also been indicated in preventing dementia.

Red wine can lower risk of heart disease, because it prevents blood clotting and plaque formation.

Caution on this one: For men, the amounts of red wine are more lenient and studies recommend a glass or two a night, but for women, having more than a few drinks a week increases the risk for breast cancer.
